SBMU Faculty Member patented Invention in the United States Patent & Trademark Organization

The software of System and Method for Modeling Left Ventricle of Heart has been patented in USPTO by Dr. Mercedeh Karvandi, an SBMU faculty member and echo cardiologist, and Dr. Saeed Ranjbar, a mathematician.

These two inventions have already been presented as a lecture and poster presentation in different international congresses. Besides, several articles related to these two inventions have been published in internationally accredited scientific journals.

Dr. Karvandi said that this software studies the shape of the left ventricular muscle tissue, and provides a three-dimensional model of the left ventricle fiber. Having applied this three-dimensional model of the fiber of the left ventricle in fluid dynamics (blood), it was possible to obtain a model of blood flow in the left ventricle by the software Solution Navier-stocks equations of the blood as a non-Newtonian fluid in the left ventricle which helps to observe this flow on the computer monitor. On the other hand, different types of cardiac pathology can be diagnozed by observation of changes in ventricular blood flow.

Having referred to clinical applications of these inventions, she stated that if this software could be installed in the echo machine, physicians would be able to examine the movement of muscle fibers more accurately. Therefore, changes in movement of heart muscle fibers in different pathologies help to easily diagnose the exact type of pathology.

The aforementioned software is applied in developing artificial heart systems. The present artificial hearts work only as a pump which increases the turbulence of blood flow leading to the death of red blood cells (RBC), since it lacks the motion of a normal heart. By implementing this motion algorithm on polymer and constructing an artificial heart in which the trend of motion has been considered, is closer to the normal heart structure which can function longer period of time.
